How can we create sporting environments where every athlete feels safe, respected and supported? The project RISE – Rise Empowered Above Sexual Violence in Sports is working to answer this question by strengthening the prevention of sexual violence and promoting a culture of safety and respect across Europe.

Through research conducted in six partner countries, RISE has identified key challenges, gaps in safeguarding and existing good practices. The findings highlight the importance of education, clear procedures for reporting incidents of sexual violence, victim- and survivor-centred support, and shared responsibility for preventing sexual violence in sport.

Turning research into action is one of RISE’s main objectives. The project has developed practical resources for the entire sporting community, including policy recommendations, a protocol for identifying and supporting victims and survivors, a guide to codes of conduct, and a manual for creating safe sporting environments that prioritise athletes’ dignity, mental health and well-being. In addition, a step-by-step information leaflet helps people understand their rights, recognise inappropriate behaviour and know where to seek support.

Education is at the heart of this initiative. RISE has developed 12 training modules: six for sports professionals and six for young athletes, with 24 hours of training content for each learning pathway. An open-access e-learning platform makes these materials available online, extending their reach beyond the project’s activities.

The project has also launched the European social media campaign “Sport Against Sexual Violence”, using videos and digital content to raise awareness, encourage dialogue and promote change within the sporting community.

As RISE comes to an end, partners from Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain are working to ensure that these resources continue to make a positive impact beyond the project’s duration.
