During the second week of October, Red Deporte y Cooperación took part in a transnational meeting of the Green Medical Generation (GMG) project, held at Badr University in Cairo. The meeting brought together partners from Egypt, Lebanon, Sweden, the Netherlands and Spain to share progress and coordinate the next steps of this European initiative focused on environmental sustainability in the healthcare sector.

The GMG project addresses an important reality: climate change directly affects public health, while the healthcare sector itself also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and environmental degradation. In response to this challenge, GMG aims to promote more sustainable healthcare practices and raise awareness of the relationship between the environment and health.

Its main objectives include integrating sustainability education and training into medical and health sciences studies, encouraging more environmentally responsible professional practices, and strengthening digital skills and capacity-building in this field.

During the meeting, partners reviewed the progress of various studies on the implementation of environmental sustainability approaches in healthcare, community and sports settings. Red Deporte has also contributed by coordinating the participation of health-sector volunteers who have supported the organisation’s health and environmental initiatives over recent years.

The aim is to share these experiences and transfer good practices to the national contexts of each participating country, helping to reduce the healthcare sector’s carbon footprint and its negative impact on the environment.

The project’s next meetings are planned to take place in Amsterdam and Genoa during 2026, continuing the work towards a more sustainable and healthier healthcare model.

GMG promotes a fundamental idea: protecting people’s health also means caring for the environment.
