A Historic Jersey to build a brighter future

Some sporting memorabilia represents far more than a memorable match. It tells a story, preserves a legacy and, years later, can become a powerful force for social change.

In 1997, international referee José María García-Aranda officiated the Intercontinental Cup Final in Tokyo between Borussia Dortmund and Cruzeiro. After the match, he received a Borussia Dortmund jersey signed by the players who took part in that historic victory.

For almost 30 years, José María has carefully preserved this unique piece of football history. Today, he has decided to give it a new purpose by making it available through Red Deporte Foundation to support a social-impact initiative.

Supporting Children in Zambia

The 1997 Borussia Dortmund jersey could become the starting point of a fundraising initiative to support vulnerable children and young people in Lusaka, Zambia.

The vision is to build a new Youth Sport & Education Centre that will provide street-connected children with opportunities to grow, learn and thrive in a safe environment.

The centre is designed to provide access to:

  • Education and learning opportunities.
  • Sport as a tool for personal development.
  • Mentoring and guidance.
  • Protection and a safe environment.
  • Daily structure that supports long-term inclusion and wellbeing.

Red Deporte is currently developing the architectural concept for the centre while preparing the next steps on the ground. In the coming months, the project team will assess the site in Lusaka, secure the necessary permits and establish the foundations required to move the project forward.

Bringing the Borussia Dortmund Community Together

Before launching any public campaign, Red Deporte has approached Borussia Dortmund to explore the possibility of developing this initiative together and to discuss the conditions under which the historic jersey could be used.

The aim is to bring BVB supporters together through a transparent fundraising initiative connected to Red Deporte’s work with children and young people in Zambia. The project also represents a fitting opportunity as the club approaches the 30th anniversary of its historic UEFA Champions League and Intercontinental Cup triumphs.

Several fundraising models are currently being considered, including a charity auction, a raffle-style campaign or another legally compliant participation format. The final approach will depend on legal requirements, communication guidelines, platform considerations and alignment with Borussia Dortmund.

Further details regarding the campaign, fundraising target and participation model will be announced once the planning process has been completed.

One historic jersey. One unforgettable football legacy. One opportunity to help create a brighter future for children in Zambia.
